Wedding blues – short contest story
Standing in one corner of the crowded and brightly lit grounds, Arjun dug
his hands deeper into his pockets and let out a small sigh. As he’d
expected, his friend was already entertaining a group of the bride’s friends
and he hadn’t even gotten as far as hello. Of course, Arjun knew which girl
he’d like to say hello to. He’d spotted her as soon as the wedding party had
arrived, looking pretty in a blue saree. Scanning the gathering, his eyes
rested on the newly-weds. Just then, the groom also looked up and beckoned
Arjun to his side with a little head jerk. ‘Probably wants a drink’, thought
Arjun, as he walked towards the decorated stage where the bride and groom
were smiling politely for family members and cameras.
Three minutes later, Arjun found himself walking back from the stage, this
time with a smile on his face. The bride had wanted a favour. She’d bought a
wedding gift for her new husband and needed someone to collect it from her
friends. Grinning slightly, Arjun walked towards the gaggle of girls now
loading their plates with food. “Uhmmm, excuse me, but the bride asked me to
bring her the gift she got.” Arjun began hesitatingly, aware that the girl
in the blue saree was three feet away from him. One of the girls looked up
from her plate, the contents of which she had been contemplating, and gave
Arjun a grin. “Oh right. Here you go.” She pulled a silver wrapped box from
the bag on her shoulder and handing it to Arjun, went back to her plate and
the bowl of rasgullas which she had been eyeing. Sighing under his breath,
Arjun turned around and walked away.
A couple of drinks and some chicken tikka later, Arjun realised the crowd
was thinning. It was getting late and the festivities were almost over. His
friend had left some time back, escorting the bride’s friends back to their
hotel. The girl in the blue saree was leaving too. From his safe little
corner he saw her heading towards the parking lot, and felt a little twinge
for not having the courage to speak to her. But even as he thought of
everything he could have said to her at various times in the evening, she
turned for one last glance at the waning festivities. And as Arjun watched,
the girl in the blue saree smiled at him and he felt a smile reach his face
too.
Its three years later, and Arjun is looking at wedding photos. His friend
and his wife look back at him from the album and he still can’t believe they
are going to be parents soon. A tap on the shoulder wakes him from his
reverie and Arjun looks up.
“What saree do I wear for the party?”
Arjun smiles. “Blue”.
