Magic – short contest story
The Indian Railway train #2032 down Raajdhaani Express slowed down and finally stopped at a railway station. There were very few people on the platform. A frail man stood on the platform, facing the train. He was doing small magic tricks. He pulled out a scarf from nowhere and his wand vanished into thin air! Inside the train a ‘man of science’ and an author of romantic novels sat by the window seats, facing each other. He relied on logic and she (the author), relied on her heart. The two watched this frail man’s show through their windows as he continued to grab passengers’ attention.
The man (of science) said to the author- “All magic is but a showmanship.”
She (the author,) smiled and said- “The magic is more a feeling and less an act. It’s astonishment – sublime and pure. ”
He argued- “Magic is when you give up reasoning on something that you don’t understand”
She shook her head- “There’s little to understand and much to feel. Magic is an experience. Magic is what happens when the first drops of rain kiss the soil or when a cool breeze sweeps the grassy plains like tides!
Magic is what happens when a rainbow arches across the skies or when the crescent moon shines on starry nights!
Magic is what happens when you meet someone special, when lips lock on quiet sea-shores, hearts hammer wildly and bodies shiver!”
He begged to differ- “Everything has a reason. It’s all trickery!”
She insisted: “Don’t go into the act. Don’t try to decipher it. Just experience the thrill of watching it. Deciphering it will kill the charm.”
He kept quiet. Soon the train started moving sluggishly and the magic show was over. He held a newspaper before his eyes and she immersed herself in a novel.
Suddenly she exclaimed, looking around desperately, “Where are my sandals?!”
From the corner of his eye, he saw a boy jumping down to the platform from their bogey with a sack in his hand. The boy joined the frail magician and the two started running away.
He shrugged and said to her, smiling, “Magic!”

Awesome story.Simple and well written.Kudos to the writer.
Very well constructed short story. The ending was unexpected and takes the story several notches above good. You really managed to create different moods and also threw in an exciting ending with so little content space to work on.
