Book Review: Corporate Atyachaar By Abhay Nagarajan
“George Pattison once said, “ it is better to fight for something than live for nothing.” Corporate Atyaachar is one such story of a young graduate freshly out of grad school who learns the nuances of the business world bit by bit fighting each day. The author Abhay Nagarajan paints a colorful picture of the life of a young 24-year-old recruit his trials and tribulations and his tryst with an irksome, self obsessed narcissist boss.
Armed with a bachelors degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce and a masters in finance the protagonist relocates from Delhi to Bangalore where he works under the ever-watchful eye of his boss- HBS. The description though apt, it’s repeated mention to describe the boss is a bit vexing to the reader’s eye. The story then revolves around the various rendezvous as seen from the protagonist’s viewpoint.
Corporate Atyaachar subtly yet surely takes you through the finer details of the banking industry, the various technicalitites, portfolios and product bouquets. However if you were thinking this is”Finance for Dummies” kind of a book you will be truly disappointed since some of the terminologies for a non-finance reader would be over the top. The constant reprimanding of the boss popularly referred to as HBS of the protagonist will in certain sections leave you in flurries of laughter, especially when HBS explains to him in detail as to how he should be greeting his clients which seems to the protagonist as if he is to belly dance his way into greeting clients. Not to forget HBS’s driver who is caught red handed fantasizing about his dream girl and reprimanded by his boss in the most cheekiest of manners and for HBS to actually think that the women in Phuket were all over him because he looked like a branch head was hilarious.
The mindful gluttony with which the protagonists’ boss (HBS) talks to every salesman that he meets will remind you of our very own Indian babus who are opportunists at everything free they can lay their hands on. Corporate Atyaachar on many an instances makes you cognizant of some of the concepts of money management, after all who knew PMS was not only a female thing but also meant portfolio management services, the comparison a little slimy and shady though.
The story progresses to the market crash of 2008,an intelligent inclusion and progression by the author for his protagonist and how this small time company manages to pull through it all.
The various nomenclatures used by the protagonist to describe his clients are an interesting reflection of their personality and attitudes.
My favorite character in the book was Fem Dom, a sure and ambitious lady who could give any successful man a run for his money.
If you are looking at taking some time off work and relax, I would recommend this book for a light read. I also believe that the language and grammar in certain sections of the book could be improvised on. I congratulate the author Mr.Abhay Nagarajan on his virgin attempt at story writing. He has indeed been successful at weaving an interesting concoction of facts and fictions in depicting the life of a middle class employee. The reader will be able to relate to the melee and rumpus of the protagonists’ work and personal life. After all haven’t we all been novices in our respective careers at some point of time in our lives. We have all been there and done that.
